Rachel and I have been friends since fourth grade. We met at Vacation Bible School when her mom saved me from sitting in a pew with all the boys. Rachel offered me a piece of gum and the rest is history. We played junior high basketball together, spent long summer days at her pool, went to camp together and even took driver’s ed together (which involved many good stories that are too long for this post). Rachel has always had a knack for cooking. She decided to go to culinary arts school and now works as a chef. On one vacation we took together we happened to run into Charles Barkley at a casino and she proceeded to tell him she was a cook. He corrected her and told her she was a chef. Like I said, when Rachel and I are together there’s never a dull moment.
I remember moving into my first apartment and not having everything I needed to cook a full meal. When thinking about kitchen essentials I knew Rachel would be the perfect person to consult. That’s why we’re Resource Girls, we may not know all the answers but we can help you find them! I’m embarrassed to say I still do not own a full knife set. I need to get on that. This list is also great to think about when buying a house warming, shower or wedding gift.
5 must haves for your kitchen:
A knife set ||
It's one of the most important items to have in your kitchen. A dull knife is a real hazard, so spend a few extra bucks for a nice set. They usually include a Chef's knife, a serrated bread knife, a filleting knife, paring knife, kitchen shears, & steak knives.
A microplane ||
This little gadget can come in handy for zesting fruits & grating nutmeg, garlic or hard cheeses. It's basically a fine handheld grater!
A mixer || Whether it's a hand mixer or a stand mixer. A mixer saves a lot of time preparing cake batters, frosting, doughs & even salad dressings.
Spice Rack ||
Who doesn't like to spice things up in the kitchen? Be creative, try new recipes. There's more to life than just salt & pepper! Try drying some of your own herbs & crush or grind them to add freshness to any dish.
A cutting board ||
Great for slicing and dicing on, but also serves as a great party platter!
