My family took an amazing vacation this summer to Door County, Wisconsin. This area is also known as the Martha's Vineyard of the Midwest and it definitely lived up to it's name. My parents live in Wisconsin and although my brother and I live in the same town my sister lives a few hours away. It’s rare we are all under the same roof for more than a day or two. We spent the week hiking, watching sunsets, relaxing and getting in some much needed family time. It was a really great week!
The second day on the trip we did a hike with the entire crew. Yep you read that right, all seven adults and four kiddos. To say we were a little ambitious is an understatement. What started out as a two mile hike ended up being over four miles because we got lost on the trails. If you ask my mom we weren't lost. She claims she knew where we were the entire time, but the rest of us knew the truth. This also wasn't just a typical hike in the woods. It's laughable the amount of climbing, staying close to an edge so we didn't fall off, and stepping over fallen tree branches we did. We made it out alive without any tears, complaints or injuries. With four kids along for the ride, I’d say that’s a success. We saw some incredible views and ended up having a blast!
We brought a picnic with us for after the hike and one of the snacks we packed was this yummy trail mix my mom had made prior to the trip. I caught myself snacking on this mix for far longer than I should have a few too many times. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and salty and isn’t too bad for you. I’ve since started making it and putting it in Ziploc baggies for a snack prior to a workout or when I’m sitting at my desk at work in need of a little pick me up.
Mix equal portions of almonds, dried cranberries and Kellogg's Cracklin' Oats cereal in a bowl. It's that simple. At some point I may branch out and add sunflower seeds or chocolate chips, but for now it's the perfect little snack.
