It's officially a new year and whether you made a New Year's resolution or not we can bet you are probably feeling the need to lay off the holiday treats and, dare we say, opt for a few more La Croix's instead of glasses of wine. When wanting to make some healthier choices it can be hard to even know where to start. This just happens to be one of my favorite subjects!
Making just a few small changes will have you on your way to feeling a lot healthier in no time!
1. Throw temptation in the trash!
If it's in the house you will be tempted to eat it in a moment of weakness. Do not feel bad for throwing out junk food that your body does not need. I will never forget a Jillian Michael's podcast I listened to where she was talking about over eating at restaurants. She talked about how we sit there and pick at our plate of food, continuing to eat, long after we're full. I'm sure we can all agree we've done this. She suggested pouring water over the leftover food if we aren't taking it home or putting trash on your plate so you won't be tempted to eat the food. I laughed when I heard this because it kind of seemed outrageous and is very counter-intuitive to everything we've been taught since we were a child. We've all heard the lines, "There are starving children in Africa so we better finish everything on our plate." While I'm not suggesting one be intentionally wasteful, it is important to remember that overindulging or being hesitant to throw away something because of guilt does not help anyone that's hungry. This caramel syrup is full of preservatives and sugar and was making its way onto my Halo Top ice cream a little too often so it had to go. Take inventory of your cabinets, yes, those ones that are high up and way back in your pantry. Throw away chips, cookies and sugary cereal that you don't need!
2. It's all about the substitutions!
I didn't realize there were so many healthy substitutions until I started using the Thug Kitchen cookbook. I began eating more flavorful AND healthier than I ever had. How was this possible? I felt like I had discovered some big secret that healthy could taste amazing. I no longer needed butter, oils or sugary anything to make my food taste amazing. Here are some of my favorite substitutions:
Coconut Oil || There is truly no reason to buy butter, you can use coconut oil on everything! Rub it on your corn on the cob, melt it over popcorn with cajun seasoning and nutritional yeast, cook your eggs and hash browns in it. The sky is the limit.
Agave Nectar || Get rid of syrup and artificial sweeteners. Agave nectar is an all natural sweetener that is derived from a plant. You can use it to sweeten coffee, on pancakes, in oatmeal you name it!
Silk Creamer || There are SO many bomb dairy free creamers out there now. Even if you aren't worried about being dairy free, these amazing substitutions have a quarter of the calories and preservatives as regular coffee creamer and still taste amazing.
Almond Butter || This is a staple in my kitchen. I LOVE Justin's Vanilla Almond Butter. It's a little more expensive but this is one scenario where you definitely get what you pay for. No need for butter on pancakes or waffles, substitute almond butter instead. Skip cream cheese and add to a bagel or toast. It's awesome on apples and bananas too!
Nutritional Yeast || After cooking with Thug Kitchen you get used to using a lot of nutritional yeast pretty quick. This makes an amazing cheese substitute and is MUCH better for you. We have this bomb creamy veggie soup recipe that uses nutritional yeast instead of cheese. It is to die for!
3. Think quick and easy!
I LOVE eggs. If it weren't for sushi and eggs I could be vegan but I just can't let eggs go. They are super quick to make, have a lot of protein and you can cook them a million different ways. Whether you love eggs or not I cannot stress the importance of having healthy foods readily available. This is another reason I love my Isagenix shakes, simple and nutritious. Whatever this means for you make sure you have some healthy things you can whip up right away. This will stop you from eating an entire bag of chips because after reading rule number one it shouldn't be there, but even if it was you have something else readily accessible!
4. Don't forget FUN!
There are tons of healthier options out there for when you're ready to have fun and indulge a little. I LOVE ice cream and discovering Halo Top was a game changer for me. It's high in protein and is made with stevia and other natural ingredients. The best part is it truly tastes like ice cream. Having an all or nothing mentality never works so you won't hear us saying we never have treats. However, even indulging can taste good and not leave you with a stomach ache. I love throwing some strawberries on top of the vanilla Halo Top. YUM!
One thing I will never be giving up is coffee! How cute is this Anthro mug I got for Christmas? I have been washing it and reusing it every day. Plain coffee and my Silk caramel flavored creamer has me ready to face the day!
Hope your Friday is amazing! Would love to hear what tricks you have for staying healthy!
Happy New Year!
