When Cat and I started The Resource Girls we knew we wanted a motto that explained us and our blog in just a few short words. This was no easy task, but after talking through our true passion and reason for starting this blog we kept coming back to “Be Resourceful. Be You.” We chose the word resourceful because we’re always trying to be just that in our everyday life. Cat and I have always been those girls who aren’t willing to break the bank to look good and feel good. We get way too excited about a bomb sale and thrift store shopping, we’re known to be coupon queens and quickly learned after graduating college that adult life calls for a budget and have tried to stick to one ever since.
The second part to our motto is one we preach often both here and over on our Instagram, be you. Being yourself, just like being resourceful, is a phrase we try to live out in all areas of our life.
Whether it’s a crazy fashion sense, a loud laugh, or being okay with a Friday night in, on the couch, with just a glass of wine and your cat, it’s important to stay true to you. Clearly the last part of that sentence is my life. Dolly, my cat, and I love our Friday night couch dates which usually includes an episode of Dateline. Girl, don’t judge. But, in all seriousness we've learned over and over again in our twenties that no one, other than yourself, can be you! We also found the closer we got to thirty the less we worried about what others thought. This can be difficult though, and we definitely recognize that.
I think being yourself starts with embracing what you were given. We always want something we don’t have. I’ve always wanted curly hair, but I had to come to terms long ago that it’s just not going to happen. My sister got that and it still annoys me to this day! We live in a world where we can change just about anything with our looks. Although, these Resource Girls are not ones to shy away from a fun and different look from time to time, this can definitely be a very dangerous path and one that sometimes doesn’t really end with you feeling that much better about yourself. We all at times, I’m sure, have thought having different eyes, body shape or a different personality will make us better, more likeable or happier. The truth is, at least the truth I have come to find, what really makes you happy in life is finding a way to love yourself and be true to that. This can be hard because let’s be honest, we’re all harder on ourselves than everyone else is. When you struggle with this, remember you were born unique. Changing what you were given makes you a little more like someone else and a lot less like the one true and beautiful self you were born to be.
So embrace those curves, big feet, or hair type you hate about yourself.
It makes you, YOU!
A few other tips to help you embrace your beautiful face, soul and spirit.
- Be okay with making mistakes and don’t be too hard on yourself when you do
- Ask yourself what makes your spirit feel good and what doesn’t and then try to do more of the good.
- Push yourself just outside the line of your comfort zone. You never know what’s waiting over there that could push you to new heights!
- Be genuine and honest. These two qualities go a long way and what’s more attractive than someone who isn’t afraid to admit they’re a little weird, quirky or just downright doesn’t give two craps.
- Always remember, haters gonna hate! You will never please everyone or make all the people in your life happy so don't concern yourself with that. Focus on doing you!
