Here at the Resource Girls you will never hear us blogging about fad diets or restrictive eating. We always try to abide by the 80% healthy, 20% fun rule when it comes to food. However, warmer weather and longer days have us thinking about shorts and tank tops which then has us reexaming our diet.
We hate things that are over complicated and expensive so when I learned about these four tips for healthier living from one of the doctors I work with I couldn’t help but share, with his permission of course. Unfortunately working in the Digestive Health Institute you see a lot of childhood obesity. Not to get all scientific but it’s unbelievable how many health problems are caused from a poor diet. So enough of that business. This summer you can abide by these four rules to have the most fun and be the best version of you!
Lay off the sugary drinks
Summer has us all craving cocktails on a patio, Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that! However, be careful what you drink. A couple sugary drinks can equal the same amount of calories as an entire meal. Try to stick to natural sweeteners and flavors, think fresh lemon and limes instead of flavored syrups. My go to drink is a vodka soda with lime. It’s light and refreshing and half the calories of a margarita or craft brew beer. Also be careful with juices, even 100% fruit juices. Juices are super concentrated. There are three to four apples in one 8oz glass of apple juice. Eat an apple instead!
Warmer temperatures leave us with no excuse not to exercise. This doesn’t mean you have to join Cross Fit or go to yoga every day, just do something. Try to move for sixty a minutes a day. Do something that you enjoy - walk the dogs, go for a run, swim, bike ride, whatever it is you enjoy grab a friend and get movin’!
Palm sized portions
When it comes to your plate don’t eat anything bigger than your palm. There is endless amounts of data out there about proper sizes of protein, carbs, veggies, etc. This is not scientific, it’s just a guide. Your palms are always with you and they’re proportional to your body so you can’t go wrong!
We’ve all done it, eat an entire bag of chips while watching the Bachelor. Time to say goodbye to distracted eating. Eating while sitting at your desk, scrolling through Facebook on your iPad or while watching a show is no bueno. When you’re focused on an electronic device this leaves no room to listen to your body and know when you’re full. Only eat when you’re sitting down at the table at meal times or obviously if you need a small snack throughout the day. However, say no to mindless, distracted eating.
We’re all busy and life is complicated. However, by sticking to these four simple rules - no sugary drinks, exercise, eating nothing bigger than your palm and eating with no distractions we can promise your summer will be full of fun instead of full of guilt related to food and overeating. Now pass the sunscreen, we’ve got a tan to work on!
Lastly, LC and I are both obsessed with these pants. we each snagged a pair when we were in Chicago for the #CorzettThreat. Shop this effortless summer look below, hat and all!
