It's no secret here at The Resource Girls we're obsessed with motivational tanks and positive vibes. Nothing makes you feel more like a boss than having a mantra or meaningful saying on your tank when you're sweating in hip hop fitness or killing it at the gym!
We love meeting other boss ladies that inspire us to be better versions of ourselves and keep on hustlin'. Tara is one such lady. Cat originally met Tara through Pearl Street Fitness. This girl screams boss.
We love that she's not afraid to lift heavy weights, embrace her age and encourage women on the daily to be the best version of themselves. She trains at two studios in Denver and regularly posts all kinds of workouts, health tips and inspiration on her Instagram (so fear not if you're not a Denver local).
We've often heard rumors that if you lift heavy weights you'll begin to look like a man. This couldn't be further from the truth! Tara is guest posting on why this is a load of crap and four moves you can do to build some lean mean muscle.
When girls tell me they don't want to lift heavy weights because they are afraid they will "get bulky" or "look like a man," it is frustrating beyond belief. That statement is simply not a reality. Lifting weights torches body fat and burns calories by keeping your body burning fat all day long. It makes you feel more empowered, prevents injury, and destroys belly fat.
Here is a really great article going into more extensive detail. The article discusses the important roles that hormones, body composition and diet play as HUGE factors contributing to the way that male and females build muscle.
I'm not here to tell you what you should and shouldn't do, but I will guarantee that you won't look like a man after you start to lift heavy weights, the right way. You also have to understand that every body is different and people respond to changes in training differently. Do what works best for your body type and always avoid injury. Don't know where to start? Try the moves listed here!
All moves can be done with a twenty pound dumbbell or kettle bell.
Weight stays at your chest and pressed over your head in a constant motion.
Reverse Lunge & Curl
Curl the DB or KB up as you step back into a reverse lunge
Plank Out with Saggital Row
Dumbbell is in between your arms as you push back into a plank, pop up with one foot forward and row to your ribs.
Toes point out, swing through your legs and stand up as it comes up overhead.
