Yesterday I celebrated my 31st birthday! I'm feeling in a great place and excited to see what 31 has in store for me. I recently chopped off my hair and went back to my brunette roots, photos of that to come soon. Promise! I had orientation for my MSW program and I'm feeling so ready to get this whole school thing started. I also still have that wifey glow from gaining my Mrs. status not too long ago.
I'm celebrating the good vibes that have been on a roll lately in my life and it feels great!
Along with my good vibes, today I'm sharing five of my current favorite things.
One: New Podcast
This isn't the first time I've had a podcast on my fav fives list. Most nights I lay in bed with one playing to calm my mind and get me away from the TV. I also love listening to them while I'm in the kitchen cooking, cleaning up on the house, on a long drive or while taking a walk outside. Season Two of Undisclosed just started a few weeks ago and I'm loving it. Season One was all about the Adnan Syed case, which P.S. who is excited to hear the news he's getting a new trial? This girl was. Anyways, they have an all new season with a whole new case that's shaping up to be pretty interesting.
The Undisclosed team was one of the main causes for Adnan being granted a new trial, so I'm curious what they'll be able to do for Joey Watkins in this new season.
The newest Podcast I'm loving though, is by Young House Love. I was a big time fan of their blog and was super bummed when they stepped away from it over a year ago. When I got wind that they started a Podcast they had me at the download button. I wasn't sure how home decor would translate into a Podcast, but if you're wanting something new, fresh and only around thirty minutes an episode then I'd recommend this one. It's not just about decor too as a recent episode was all about sponsored posts for bloggers, how those work and why people have a love/hate relationship with them. John and Sherry are super real, sometimes adorably quirky and all around sound like they'd be the best next door neighbors. What's your favorite podcast right now?
Two: Smoothie Recipe & My Ninja Blender
I got a Ninja blender recently thanks to our wedding registry and I'm slightly obsessed. I've wanted one for awhile and couldn't wait to get that bad-boy out of the box and get to blending. In true girly fashion, I scoured Pinterest for some healthy smoothie recipes and tried a few concoctions before I found my own recipe I loved so much. I drink them most mornings for breakfast and if I'm feeling extra daring I'll have a second for my lunch. I think the key to any smoothie is to not overdo the fruit. I love fruit and it's great for you, but it can also increase the sugar content. Find a good balance of flavor and healthy for the perfect yummy drink. I've found that almond butter and agave nectar are two great ways to amplify the overall taste without adding a ton of sugar either. I don't like bananas and boy is it hard to find smoothie recipes without them. I've found avocados make a great replacement for a banana and adds a great smooth, rich texture to the smoothie. Other additions I like are flaxseeds, peaches, kale, and if I'm feeling frisky a little bit of chocolate almond milk.
3 Tablespoons old fashioned oats
A handful of spinach
4-5 Strawberries (or a small handful of any fruit you have on hand)
1-2 Tablespoons almond butter
A couple teaspoons of agave nectar
8-10 oz Almond milk
2-3 Tablespoons chia seeds added in after blending all other ingredients.
Three: Be Here Now
Nathan and I were MAJOR Spartacus fans back in 2010. I'll never forget when it first premiered...Nathan was on cloud nine. We quickly fell in love with Andy Whitfield, the guy who plays Spartacus, as did every fan of the show. Once season one ended, we started realizing that season two was taking a lot longer to come out then we thought it should have. Nathan did a little research and found out they had put season two filming on hold due to Andy undergoing treatment for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
He was diagnosed in March 2010 and after some treatment was given a clean bill of health and declared cancer free in June 2010. Shortly after this he started training again for season two and all was right with his world. Not too long after this though he started experiencing quite a bit of unexplained pain, so he attended a routine medical appointment and was told he had relapsed.
Unfortunately, due to his second diagnosis, Andy had to quit the show all together and focus solely on his health. He and his wife decided to film this season of their life in hopes to make it into a documentary someday and influence the world with their story. Andy died exactly a year following his cancer diagnosis, in September of 2011 and his wife spent a better part of the last few years trying to get this documentary out into the public. It finally happened and one fateful day Nathan noticed it was showing for only one night, at one time, in a theater in our town. We saw it on Tuesday, May 24th, four days before our wedding, and it's a night we won't forget. Not only did it put our wedding, marriage and love in perspective but it filled us with an array of emotions. The documentary is an inspiring story of faithful optimism, hope and belief in oneself. The amount of positivity that both Andy and his wife carried with them was just unreal to watch and something I'm striving to attain in my own life. We received bracelets at the film that night and they say 'Be Here Now.' This was not only the name of the film and a tattoo that Andy has on his forearm, but the mantra that this couple lived their life by.
I've worn this bracelet almost every day since seeing the film and don't plan on taking it off anytime soon. It's a huge reminder to me to live for today, be in the moment and don't ever doubt how a positive thought, word and action can turn a day around. Here's a brief YouTube video back when they were trying to raise money for the film on Kick-starter and it shows a few minutes of the film. Check here to see if it's showing at a theater near you.
One Friday night in July I spent the evening with coworkers drinking wine, eating pizza, and getting a little pampered. One of my coworker's started selling Posh and I'd been dying to try it out since she perked my interest a few months back. Being the budget girl I am, I set a limit at three items and couldn't be happier with my purchases or with the brand. Perfectly Posh is a line of pampering products for both men and women. My usual morning routine is pretty quick and has been in need of a little extra love, so I specifically got a few things to help change it up a bit. Although my face routine will always include Origin's, as I've been a long time user, I tried out the Best Face Forever facial scrub the night of the party and loved it. It has a minty vibe to it that wakes me up in the morning and is the perfect scrub for cleaning away all that dirt and grim on my face! I also love my Enlightened Chunk Bar. It lathers like a body wash and smells amazing. I don't know if I'll ever go back to plain body wash or body soap again. As much as he won't admit it, Nathan is a little obsessed with it too. Lastly, I got a tub of The Girl's Gone Green body butter. It has shea butter and aloe vera in it, so it's perfect after being in the sun and moisturizes my skin so well! The chunk bar is by far my favorite addition to my mornings and it's been nice having a little extra pampering in my day to day routine. If you have questions about the brand or want to order your own, let me know and I'll hook you up with my girl, Alyssa!
Five: Black and White Striped Dress
I got this dress at Target before our honeymoon and it's quickly become my summer staple piece.
I wore it multiple times on our honeymoon, I wear it in the evenings running errands, as a cover up at the pool and I love that it can be dressed down or up. I can even throw on a pair of jeans with it and love how that look turns it into more of a tunic vibe. Black, white and stripes are always my guilty pleasure, so it's a no brainer I snagged this dress the minute I saw it on a rack.
