Apparently when we were in Chicago for LC’s bachelorette party (read more about that here) we got tons of food inspiration. We already blogged about our favorite Chi Town salad and now we’re talking about our matcha tea obsession. Common theme, if you’re in a food rut head to the Windy City. Nicole kept ordering matcha tea when we stopped at Beatrix and I hopped on the train. Maybe we’re behind the times but neither of us had matcha tea before.
What is matcha tea?
Originated in China
Type of green tea
Has 10 times more antioxidants than regularly brewed green tea
Uses the entire leaf and undergoes less processing than green tea does
More antioxidants than goji berries, blueberries, acai berries or broccoli
Burns calories and increases energy
Strengthens the immune system
In true RG fashion we had to figure out how to make our own matcha tea at home. You can easily find matcha at Starbucks or most coffee shops but it’ll cost a pretty penny. Since matcha is considered a superfood you probably won’t find a matcha green tea latte for under $5.
We’ve whipped up a little home recipe that tastes just as great and is super simple!
Almond milk, sub vanilla almond milk if you’re feeling wild
Sweetener, I prefer Agave but honey or Stevia are good options too
Optional Add-In’s (obviously not all at once!)
1 drop peppermint essential oil
½ teaspoon tumeric
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp ginger
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
1 tbsp raw cacao powder
½-1 tsp matcha powder
1 cup hot water or almond or combination of the two
If you’re feeling really wild try vanilla almond milk
1 tbsp of sweetener
Simply heat your water or almond milk and mix in your matcha powder and sweetener. We talked about our obsession with this hand frother before but it’s a quick way to get that latte feeling at home. You can also use a french press if you have one.
Personally, one of the things I love about being at a coffee shop is the feeling I get when I’m there. I’m relaxed, I like the music, I like the furniture, etc. There’s no reason you can’t create these feelings in your own phone. Work that spotify, dim the lights, turn on a lamp, grab your favorite book and take your mind there. Shut off your TV, let the laundry go and take a few minutes to sip and soak it all in.
